Climate

The climate conditions that prevail at the protected area are typical of high mountains with rich forests. The climate, of the area is between the Mediterranean and the mid-European climate with cold winters and cool and humid summers. It varies depending on the altitude and it is affected by the multifarious terrain.

The area receives the highest amount of rainfall in Greece, a fact that is imprinted to the extended plant coverage of the area. Most of the rainfalls are noted at Timfi and at the mountains of Central Zagori, at Metsovo, at Eastern Zagori, at Smolikas, whilst at Western Zagori and at Konitsa less rainfall is noted.

At higher altitudes, the winters are harsh with low temperatures, cloudiness, plenty rainfalls, ice, frequent snowfalls and extended snow coverage from October to May.

At lower altitudes, the climate is more mild, snow coverage lasts for a few weeks, ice period is shortened from November to April, limited sunlight occur and rains are less during summer.

The average yearly temperature at the limits of the settlements varies from 10 to 14 Celsius degrees and the annual temperature width is particularly high.
