General Information

THE PROTECTED AREA

The National Park of Northern Pindos is placed at northwestern Greece and includes mountainous areas of the Regions of Ioannina and Grevena. It was founded at 2005 by Common Ministerial Decision 23069 (ΦΕΚ 639/14-6-2005, in Greek). It extends in an area of 1,969,741,000 square meters and it is one of the largest continental protected areas of Greece.

Inside the protected area of the Northern Pindos National Park, two Zones of protection have been determined. In these zones strict restrictions for the protection of the ecosystems apply. In particular, Nature Protection Areas (Zone I) are determined the three cores of the National Park: the core of Pindos (Valia Calda) National Forest, Vikos canyon and Aoos canyon. Around these areas and in some extra sites of the National Park, the Zone of Preservation of Natural Habitats and Species (Zone II) extends. Finally, beyond the National Park region and for its more effective protection, four particular areas have been determined as Peripheral Zone (Zone II).
