Management

The Management Agency was founded in 2002, and since 2007 has overseen operation and management of the Northern Pindos National Park. The Management Agency is one of 28 within the Hellenic Ministry for the Environment, Physical Planning and Public Works (Υ.ΠΕ.Κ.Α.), dedicated to supervision of protected wildlife areas and it is administered by an eleven-member Administrative Board.

The Park Management Agency is headquartered in Grevena, but since February 2007, its administration is accommodated at the Aspraggeloi Information Center, located at Zagori of Ioannina. Scientific and administrative staff, guards and guides work towards protecting, monitoring and showing one of the largest land-based protected areas of our country.

The purpose of the Management Agency is the conservation and management of rare habitats, as well as the establishment of procedures and measures for ensuring the harmonious coexistence of man and nature in the context of sustainable development but also for the promotion of protected areas at local, national and global level.

The responsibilities of the Northern Pindos National Park Management Agency are:

  • The implementation of regulations and management plans
  • The monitoring and evaluation of the implementation of the regulatory terms and restrictions which are imposed by relevant directives, as well as administration and operation regulations and management plans. The Management Agency is responsible for collecting, sorting and processing of environmental information and data for the area of responsibility. It is also responsible for the establishment and operation of relevant databases, in accordance with the applicable national standards.
  • Offering consultation on matters concerning approval of environmental conditions for projects and activities that fall under its area of responsibility.
  • Cooperating with the relevant administrative and judicial authorities in enforcement of environmental and urban legislation.
  • The initiation of studies and research, as well as the execution of technical or other projects that are included in the management plan and the action programs for the protection, preservation and promotion of protected objects.
  • The undertaking of development or implementation of national or European programs and actions.
  • The information, education and training of the general public, in matters such as responsibilities and goals in terms of environmental protection.
  • The promotion, support, organization and implementation of ecotourism programs, the issue of tour licensing and the grant of licenses for scientific research, technical tests and analysis. Issuing quality and cooperation assurance certification to companies that operate within the area of responsibility, in accordance with the terms and conditions that are set out in accordance to the Administration and operation of the protected area.
  • The management of public lands that are granted to Management Agency or are leased by the Management Agency during the current provisions, as well as the rental of private land.
